Buoyed by the coal prices going higher across the world, coal miners in Indonesia are in a state of production spree.
The coal production target has been set at 489 MnT for 2017, the Energy Ministry of the largest coal exporting nation publicized recently. The target is up by 12.7% from the 2016 target, at 434 MnT.
Incidentally, the coal production targets have been going up despite the emphasis of the government to curtail production to preserve the valuable resource for future generations.
Bumi Resources, the largest producer in the country, will produce in excess of 90 MnT this year as compared to 86 MnT in 2016.
On the demand side, domestic consumption is also expected to increase. The government expects the domestic demand to go up to 121 MnT in 2017 from 91 MnT in 2016.
