Essar Steel – an integrated steelmaker with steel making capacity of 10 MnT pa has increased its iron ore & pellet sourcing by 12% Q-o-Q in Q3 FY17. The company sourced 3.29 MnT iron ore & pellets in Q3 FY17 compared to 2.94 MnT in Q2 FY17.
On monthly premises, the steel maker has raised its iron ore/pellet procurement by 13% from 1.10 MnT in Nov’16 to 1.24 MnT in Dec’16. So far in this fiscal (till Dec’16), the steel maker has sourced 8.83 MnT iron ore.
Domestic sources accounted for 93% share in Essar Steel’s iron ore sourcing – Out of 3.29 MnT iron ore/pellets sourced in Q3 FY17, 93% (3.09 MnT) was procured from domestic sources. Procurement from NMDC (Chhattisgarh) increased significantly on quarterly basis from 1.51 MnT in Q2 FY17 to 1.69 MnT in Q3 FY17.
Iron ore sourcing from Odisha merchant mines also moved up in Q3 FY17. The company procured 1.40 MnT from Odisha merchant mines in Q3 FY17 against 1.28 MnT in Q2 FY17. Out of 1.40 MnT iron ore sourced from Odisha in Q3 FY17, largest share was of Serajuddin Mines (0.73 MnT) followed by KJS Ahluwalia mines at 0.49 MnT.
Essar Steel imported two pellet vessels in Q3 FY17 – Essar Steel imported 0.2 MnT pellets for its Hazira plant in Q3 FY17. Out of which 0.11 MnT pellets was of Australian origin and 0.09 MnT was imported from Bahrain. In Q2 FY17, Essar Steel imported 0.15 MnT iron ore from Brazil and South Africa.

Essar Steel’s pellet production at 2.59 MnT in Q3 FY17 – Essar Steel produced 2.59 MnT pellets in Q3 FY17 compared to 2.43 MnT in previous quarter, up 7% Q-o-Q.
Essar Steel’s pellet coastal movement up further in Q3 FY17 – As per customs data maintained with SteelMint, in Q3 FY17, Essar Steel moved nearly 2.36 MnT pellets from its Vizag and Paradip plants for its Hazira facility. However in Q2 FY17, the steel giant moved 2.22 MnT pellets from its pellet plants for its Hazira based steel plant.
The company exported 0.41 MnT pellets in Q3 FY17 against 0.53 MnT in previous quarter.
