India’s plan to delay coal plant closures to hit climate goals

India’s government is planning for a slower retirement of aging coal-fired power plants and at the same time it is also adding newer sites. Officials are considering to shut down power plants of less than 5 GW in contrast to the proposed shutdown of 25 GW in 2020. This move will keep fossil fuel capacity higher for years and potentially stall efforts to hit climate goals.
