India's imports of iron pellets and iron lumps will increase this fiscal according to JSW steel officials, mentioned in a raw material and steel conference organised by Platts in Singapore. According to Mr Arun Maheshwari, senior vice president with JSW Steels, current imports of pellets and lumps are at 3.2 million tonnes per annum and it is expected to rise to 5 million in 2013-2014.
He also mentioned that due to several restrictions put by Indian government to curb illegal mining, supply of iron ore in the country has impacted badly and most of the big steel mills without captive mines have to import iron ore and pellets from countries like South Africa, Australia and Bahrain.
Out of 3.2 million tonnes of imports in India in 2012-2013, 2 million tonnes was pellet and 1.2 million tonnes was iron ore lumps.
