INDIA-Mesco to add 1.2 mtpa capacity by 2015

Bhubaneswar:

Mesco steel has successfully completed the public hearing for obtaining
Environmental clearance for is 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) brownfield
expansion project at Kalinganagar, Jajpur.
In the 1st phase the company is planning to commission 1.2
mtpa capacity  by 2015 with an investment of Rs.3000 crore. In the second phase
the capacity would be raised to 3.5 mtpa.

“We’ll invest
Rs.3000 crore in the phase-I for 1.2 mtpa capacity for which financial
arrangement has been completed. We are in talks with leading European Equipment
Manufacturers for supply of equipment and Machinery” said Rita Singh,
Chairperson and MD.

Mesco has a 1
mtpa Pig Iron plant at KaligaNagar and has its own standalone mine at Malangtoli
in Keonjhar District, which has a reserve of 90 million tonnes.

However, the
company has demanded more iron ore mines to cater its iron ore requirement
after the expansion. “Our iron ore requirement for 3.5 mtpa capacity would be
168 million tonnes for 30 years and for 50 years it would be 280 million
tonnes. The Malangtoli mines have a reserve of only 90 million tonnes, so we’ll
be hugely short of iron ore, which we’ll have to bring it from open market” She
said.
