In the latest notification issued by Ministry of Steel (Govt. of India), several steel products have been brought under the purview of Quality Control. The Order may be called- The Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control), Order 2018.
In Oct’17, Ministry of Steel had issued a notification under which BIS for continuously Pre painted Galvanized steel sheets and coils were to come into application from 20 Jan’18. But the order dated 19 Jan’18, mentioned that the order will be applicable from 20 Feb’18.
In the latest notification issued on 16 Feb’18, the govt. has announced imposition of BIS from tomorrow (i.e. 20 Feb’18). Pre-painted Aluminium zinc alloy metallic coated steel strip and sheet (plain) are also subject to BIS.
Indian steel ministry makes BIS standards mandatory for all steel products and imports for all domestically manufactured iron and steel to promote long term growth of domestic steel sector and prevent industry from cheaper imports of China.
JSW Steel officials in its quarterly results announced on 31 Oct’17 mentioned “imports of color-coated, especially where material is coming in from China and Vietnam, color-coated was earlier not under the BIS. We had taken this up with the government over the past few months to put more and more products under BIS. Application of BIS should contain to some extent (the imports) and the customs should be able to control substandard product dumping, which are taking place in those categories.”

India’s Galvanised steel imports up 11% in CY17 – According to customs data maintained with SteelMint, India’s import of galvanised steel (including color coated) grew by 11.4% Y-o-Y from 1.23 MnT in CY16 to 1.37 MnT in CY17.
Out of 1.37 MnT galvanised and coated steel imported to India in CY17, China remained the 2nd largest supplier occupying 26% share (0.35 MnT). Vietnam remained the 4th largest supplier with 11% share.
