Despite the sharp rise in prices, Indian buyers actively booked Indonesian coal in the last few weeks amid domestic coal shortage. A total of 2.09 million tonnes (mn t) of the material is set to arrive at Indian ports by 16 Nov’21, CoalMint’s vessel line-up data (as on 27 Oct’21) reveals. Shipments from Indonesia into India stood at 1.11 mn t in the same period last month.
Arrival of vessels increased due to acute domestic coal shortage within the country which compelled buyers to import Indonesian coal in large quantities despite its elevated prices.
In the above-mentioned period, a total volume of 0.62 mn t of thermal coal booked by Adani Enterprise is set to arrive at Dharamtar, Hazira, Krishnapatnam, Mundra, and Navlakhi ports followed by Agarwal Coal with 0.30 mn t which will arrive at Dharamtar, Magdalla, Navlakhi, and Vizag ports.
Thermal coal shipments from Australia are the second-highest with a total of 1.41 mn t. Reliance Industries is set to bring the highest volume of 0.19 mn t at Dahej and Hazira ports, followed by Adani Enterprise at 0.18 mn t at Dhamra Port.
Thermal coal shipments from Australia arriving at Indian ports gained momentum over the last few months due to its relatively cheaper prices compared to Indonesian and South African .
A total of 0.70 mn t of South African coal is also set to arrive at Indian ports with the highest quantity of 0.16 mn t booked by Tata Steel.

Krishnapatnam to take in highest shipments

A total volume of 0.71 mn t of thermal coal is set to arrive at Krishnapatnam Port from Australia (0.41 mn t), China (0.16 mn t) and Indonesia (0.13 mn t).
Mundra Port is the next highest receiver of thermal coal in this period with a total volume of 0.70 mn t from all major coal importing destinations. The port is set to receive 0.57 mn t of thermal coal from Indonesia, and 0.13 mn t from Australia.
Kandla Port is set to receive a combined 0.60 mn t from Australia, and US, while Vizag is set to receive a total of 0.47 mn t from Australia, Indonesia, and South Africa.
