Indian Coking Coal Import Rises by 5% in FY16

Indian coking coal import remained same this month against the last month. However, import fell by 15% in Mar’16 on yearly basis.

India, seen amongst the greatest coking coal trader all around, has imported 3.4 MnT of coking coal in Mar’16. The quantity was similar to the previous month. Amidst determined mounting generation of CIL, Indian steelmakers imported more coking coal in the financial year. The explanation to this is that the Indian coal-fields lacks coking coal reserve. The non-availability of quantity and quality coking coal required for steel production compels Indian steel producers to go for imports.

SteelMint analysed that the country has imported about 2.4 MnT more coal in FY16 against the last budgetary year. Further coking coal import in FY15 remained at 45.4 MnT. Though, the amount touched 47.8 MnT in current financial.

Top exporters in Mar’16

SteelMint assessed that Australia, South Africa and Canada were the prime exporter of coking coal for Indian steel makers in Mar’16. Aussie’s coal as normal commanded the imports. Australia exported 2.9 MnT of coking coal to India. The quantity constitutes a noteworthy contribution and records for about 85% of the aggregate coking import for the month.

Major discharging ports

Mormugoa Dhamra and Paradip Ports were the significant ports that held coking stocks. About 1 MnT was accounted for to be released at Mormugoa. Paradip and Dhamra ports, individually held about 0.5 MnT of coking stock in the month.

Key shippers for the month

JSW Steel, SAIL and RINL were the top shippers of the month. All these 3 represented 61% of the aggregate imported quantity.
