India is the second-largest coal importer in the world. According to the data maintained by CoalMint Research, Indian coal import has fallen 8% M-o-M to 16.48 MnT in Jul’17.
Moreover, coal import in Jul’17 was lower than the coal imports of 19.06 MnT in Jul’16, recording a decline of 14% Y-o-Y.
The coal Ministry has stated that the fall in imports is largely on account of enhanced production by CIL, due to which the country has moved from a regime of coal scarcity to a coal surplus situation.
Total coal imports during Jan’17-Jul’17 has declined 12% to 121.56 MnT, compared with 138.46 MnT in Jan’16-Jul’16 period.
However, despite the growth in domestic coal supply, the gap between supply and demand of coal cannot be bridged completely as there is insufficient domestic availability of coking coal and power plants designed on imported coal will continue to import for their operation.
