Indian Billet Exports Continue to Surge – Customs data

India is one of the major semis finished exporter which has recorded an increase of about 45% in the monthly billet exports.

According to fresh released data by Indian customs, the export for billet reported at 160,000 MT in July 2017 against 110,000 MT in June’17, surge about 45.45%.

Billet exports from India continue to surge owing to non-availability of Chinese billets and higher realisations in global markets.

During July 2017, approximately 40% of billet were supplied to South East Asian countries and remaining was sold to Nepal.

Similarly, on yearly calculations the exports have gain by 14.28% in July 2017 against 140,000 MT in July 2016. Further, in CY 2017 (Jan-Jul), the country’s total billet export was at 1.46 MnT, surge by 62.22% against same preceding last year at 0.90 MnT,

Prior to this, in CY 2016 (Jan-Dec) India’s billet export was around 1.75 MnT & in CY 2015 it was at 0.84 MnT.

India is the world’s third largest steel producer, the crude steel production of India was marked at 95.76 MnT in 2016. In 2017 (Jan’17-Aug’17) the figure of crude steel production stood at 66.46 MnT.

Indian Bulk Billet Exports Increase Sharply

According to data maintained by SteelMint Stats from 32 ports, bulk exports of billets from India are recorded at 126,300 MT in Sep’17 against 42,000 MT in Aug’17, which increase to three folds in Sept 2017.

In our previous articles, we also reported that exports of induction grade billets have picked up on low availability of blast furnace grade billets. In the month of September 11 vessels have been shipped, out of which, Mono steel shipped about 33,700, RINL shipped 29,000 MT, JSW steel 26,500 MT and SAIL loaded 20,500 MT of billets from various Indian ports.

1. Current offers for 150*150 mm billet of grade IS 2830 is assessed at USD 490-500/MT FOB India main port.

2. Indian Bulk Billet exports increase by three folds in Sept 2017 and are recorded at 126,300 MT against 42,000 MT in Aug’17.

3. Iranian billet export offers fall on low liquidity and falling global prices. Last offers for 150 mm square billet was assessed at USD 480-485/MT FOB Iran (from large mills) and USD 440-450/MT FOB Iran (from small mills).

4. Chinese billet 150*150mm, Q235 offers assessed at USD 510-520/MT, FoB China. China-origin billet was heard offered to Indonesia and the Philippines at USD 530/MT CFR.

5. Indian domestic billet trades remain moderate, the offers are assessed at INR 25,300-27,500/MT (USD 389-423) ex-works for Induction furnace grade and for size 100*100/125*125 mm.
