Indian Bar and Rod Production Up by 18% in Apr’16

India’s total bar and rod production up by about 6% to 2.75 MnT in Apr’16 compared to 2.59 MnT in Apr’15.

As per the Steel Ministry’s monthly reported data, India’s total bar and rod production in Apr’16 stood at about 2.75 MnT compared to 2.33 MnT in Mar’16. There was an increment of 18% in production.

Production of integrated steel producers like SAIL, RINL, Tata Steel, JSW Steel and JSPL reported a negative growth of 2.6% to 0.91 MnT in Apr’16 as against Mar’16. While, mini & others steel producers registered a significant growth of 32% to 1.84 MnT in the same period.

Almost all the primary steel players, except Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) has showed a decrease in production during Apr’16 compared to Mar’16, as per the JPC data.

An official of the large steel maker said that the company was under maintenance in Apr’16, which affected their production, resulting in shortage of material in major Indian markets.

He also shared that rebar offers by primary steel producers were kept on hold in May’16 owing to short supply of material, otherwise prices would correct amid lack of demand in the current month.

Primary steel producers like JSW Steel and Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) are going to start their commercial production of bar and rod soon in Dolvi (MH) and Patratu (JH) respectively. These companies are going to increase their supply of material in the market, leading to pressure on prices in near future.
