- Vedanta strengthens foothold in domestic manganese resources
- Punnam development offers long-term supply security potential
Vedanta Ltd has been declared the successful bidder for the 152-hectare Punnam manganese block in Andhra Pradesh, following an e-auction conducted by the state Department of Mines & Geology. The company received the official declaration letter on August 13, 2026, after fulfilling the required statutory compliances.
The block is currently at the G4 exploration stage, with no manganese grade disclosed in the filing.
From a market perspective, the acquisition strengthens Vedanta’s long-term raw material strategy rather than immediately altering domestic manganese availability. With the block still at G4 exploration, further exploration, resource assessment, regulatory approvals and mine development will be required before commercial production can commence.
The move is nevertheless significant for India’s manganese sector, where rising steel and ferroalloy capacity continues to support demand for domestic ore. Developing additional domestic resources could eventually help diversify supply and reduce import dependence. However, the actual supply impact will depend on the block’s resource potential, recoverable reserves and eventual production timeline.
