India: Thermal coal stocks at ports rise w-o-w amid improved arrivals

  • Inventory builds up at Vizag, Mundra, Tuticorin ports
  • Portside prices of South African coal remain under pressure

Thermal coal inventories at Indian ports rose 4.8% w-o-w to 12.29 million tonnes (mnt) in week 13 of CY’25, up from 11.72 mnt last week, as per BigMint data. The overall increase was driven by higher stockpiles at key ports.

Key port inventory trends

  • Vizag saw a 24.1% increase, with stocks reaching 0.59 mnt from 0.47 mnt last week, reflecting lower dispatches.
  • Mundra witnessed a 13.8% rise, as stocks grew to 1.09 mnt from 0.96 mnt, indicating improved arrivals.
  • Tuticorin registered a 13.9% jump, with inventory rising to 1.27 mnt from 1.11 mnt.
  • Mangalore also recorded a 13.8% gain, with stocks reaching 0.76 mnt, up from 0.67 mnt.
  • Haldia’s thermal coal inventory remained stable at 0.46 mnt, registering a marginal 0.4% increase from last week.
  • Paradip’s stocks rose 4.2% to 1.26 mnt, up from 1.21 mnt, indicating steady arrivals.

On the other hand, some ports recorded stock declines:

  • Gangavaram’s inventory dropped 18.3% to 0.12 mnt from 0.15 mnt, reflecting higher dispatches.
  • Kandla saw a 31.2% fall, with stocks falling to 0.26 mnt from 0.38 mnt.

Company-wise inventory trends

  • Adani Enterprise’s portside stocks rose 12.8% to 2.73 mnt, up from 2.42 mnt, indicating higher procurement.
  • Agarwal Coal also saw a 7% increase, with inventory reaching 1.11 mnt, up from 1.04 mnt.

Market overview

Portside South African thermal coal prices in India showed mixed trends w-o-w. RB2 (5500 NAR) remained steady at INR 8,450/t exw-Gangavaram, while RB3 (4800 NAR) stayed at INR 7,100/t exw. However, at Paradip, RB2 rose to INR 8,500-8,600/t exw, and RB3 increased to INR 7,350/t exw, though no deals were concluded.

Meanwhile, South African RB2 export offers declined by $0.50/t to $75.50/t FOB, while RB3 rose by $1/t to $59.50/t FOB. Indian sponge iron prices fell marginally by INR 50/t w-o-w to INR 27,350/t exw-Rourkela.
