China’s top 10 coal firms’ output rises over 7% y-o-y in Jan-Feb’25

  • China’s top coal producers increase output by 7.1%
  • Shanxi coal firms lead production recovery in CY’24

Mysteel Global: China’s top 10 coal producers mined a combined 390 million tonnes of raw coal during January-February, up by 25.7 million tonnes or 7.1% from the same period last year, data from the China National Coal Association (CNCA) showed. Their output accounted for 50.6% of China’s total coal production during the period.

The higher coal production was mainly due to the low comparing base during the same period last year, when many coal mines in Shanxi – the largest coal-producing province of the country – were forced to slow down production amid local authorities’ strict overproduction checks, Mysteel Global noted.

In the first two months this year, China Energy Investment Corp remained the country’s largest coal producer, with its coal output up by a marginal 0.7% on year to 102.45 million tonnes, the data showed.

Notably, coal firms based in Shanxi province all registered marked recovery in coal output compared with the same period last year. Shanxi Coking Coal Group, China’s largest coking coal producer, logged the sharpest jump of 34.1% from the year prior to reach 30.5 million tonnes.

Besides, Jinneng Holding Group saw its coal production higher by a notable 20.2% on year to notch 65.94 million tonnes over January-February.
