India: Sesa Sterlite may restart Mining in Karnataka next Month

Sesa Sterlite has received environmental clearances from Center and the State has renewed its lease. The mines may restart Iron ore mining operations in Karnataka next month, as few clearances are still awaited.

The company’s Iron ore mine in Chitradurga district (southern part in Karnataka) has 2.3 MnT pa production cap and was non operational since Aug’14. Prior to this, the mine used to produce nearly 6 MnT Iron ore per year. The lease has been renewed for 20 years effective Oct’12 and forest clearance orders have been issued.

SteelMint learnt from sources that some clearances are still awaited, following which, the company would be in a position to immediately resume Iron ore mining operations at Chitradurga. Though, it does not indicate any specific timeline, but is anticipated to happen in the very near future.
