State-owned steel behemoth SAIL consumed about 15.23 mn t of metallurgical coal in 2019-20, as per company data accessed by SteelMint. While 13.70 mn t was imported mainly from Australia and the US, about 1.53 mn t of coking coal was sourced from domestic suppliers, including BCCL and the company’s captive mines. India’s numero uno steel-maker, SAIL produced 16.5 mn t of crude steel in FY20.
