The Ministry of Steel has permitted Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) to import 5,000 t of head hardened rails for a 64 km metro corridor project for Kolkata Metro Railways, as per latest reports. Despite its 2017 policy of favouring domestically-manufactured steel the government couldn’t source the material from Indian producers as foreign experts associated with production of such rails at SAIL’s Universal Rail Mill at Bhilai Steel Plant had left India upon the outbreak of the second COVID wave. RVNL has placed a joint development order with JSPL. JSPL’s rails will be commissioned in Nov’21 on trial run for a period of one-two years.
