Indian power plant coal imports have recorded a decline of 2% M-o-M to 5.165 MnT in Nov’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA). Utilities had imported 5.245 MnT coal in Oct’17.
Coal imports had been continuously increasing since Aug’17, as the declining stock of the power plants demanded more coal. However, on account of increase in domestic coal supply and lower thermal power generation, imports have been slightly lower this month.
Total coal imported by the power utilities stood 38.79 MnT during Apr’17-Nov’17.
Adani Power (Mundra), Coastal Gujarat, JSW Energy, Semb Corp Gayathri Power and IL & FS power plant were the major coal receivers during Nov’17.
Plant-wise Break-up of Coal Imports:
Out of the total coal imported during Nov’17, power plants which run on domestic coal acquired 1.472 MnT coal for blending purpose, while plants based on imported coal acquired 3.693 MnT.
Plants Designed on Domestic Coal:
Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants increased 4% M-o-M to 1.472 MnT in Nov’17 compared with 1.422 MnT in Oct’17.
Central power utilities had imported coal for the first time since Aug’17, with NTPC Ltd acquiring coal shipment of 0.021 MnT during the month.
State power utilities of GSECL, APPDCL and TANGEDCO had imported 0.225 MnT in Nov’17, which was 60% more than the imports of 0.141 MnT recorded in Oct’17.
Coal imports of Private sector power plants fell 4% M-o-M to 1.226 MnT in Nov’17, which was 1.281 in Oct’17.
Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Coal received by plants based on imported coal dropped 3% M-o-M to 3.693 MnT in Nov’17 compared with 3.823 MnT in Oct’17.
Private sector power plants imports fell 4% M-o-M to 3.54 MnT, while the remaining coal was imported by Sikka power plant of state sector.
Coal Stock at Power Plants:
Coal consumption at the power plants declined 5% on the month to 49.299 in Nov’17 on account of lower thermal power generation.
With the continual increase in coal supply from CIL/SCCL, coal receipt by power plants was 51.83 MnT in Nov’17.
Lower consumption coupled with the increase in supply has resulted in coal stock growing back at the power stations. Total available stock at the power plants was assessed at 12.085 MnT as on 13 Dec’17, sufficient for 8 days of power generation.
