India: Portside thermal coal stocks rise 2% w-o-w

  • West coast builds led by Mundra, Mangalore
  • East coast sees mixed movements

Portside thermal coal inventories across India increased 1.6% w-o-w to 13.35 mnt in the week ended 6 March from 13.14 mnt in the previous week, reversing the decline seen earlier. The increase was mainly supported by stock build-ups at select west coast ports amid steady cargo arrivals.

East coast: Mixed trends with further fall at Gangavaram

On the east coast, Dhamra rose 2.2% to 1.29 mnt, while Paradip increased marginally by 1.2% to 1.23 mnt. Haldia also climbed 7.1% to 0.17 mnt. However, Vizag slipped 2.9% to 0.85 mnt, and Krishnapatnam declined 20.3% to 0.15 mnt. Gangavaram saw the steepest drop of 50.1% to 0.05 mnt, indicating continued evacuation. Gopalpur remained broadly stable at 0.09 mnt.

West coast: Strong build at Mundra, Mangalore

On the west coast, Mundra recorded a sharp rise of 18.3% to 1.71 mnt, while Mangalore surged 124.1% to 0.78 mnt following fresh cargo arrivals. Hazira increased 5.1% to 1.99 mnt, maintaining its position as one of the largest stockholding ports. Meanwhile, Navlakhi declined 3.4% to 0.82 mnt, Magdalla eased 3.6% to 0.77 mnt, and Dahej fell 7.5% to 0.81 mnt. Jamnagar dropped 22.1% to 0.22 mnt, while Kandla remained largely stable at 0.62 mnt.

Buyer-wise stock position

Adani Enterprise inventories remained stable at 3.36 mnt w-o-w, while Agarwal Coal stocks increased 2.3% to 1.05 mnt, indicating moderate restocking by traders.

The overall increase reflected fresh cargo arrivals at key west coast ports, particularly Mundra and Mangalore, partially offset by continued evacuation at some east coast locations such as Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam.

Outlook

Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and higher freight costs may continue to affect vessel routing and shipment schedules. Any disruption in shipping through key energy corridors could influence the pace of fresh cargo arrivals and create short-term volatility in portside stock levels.
