India: Performance of CIL in May’17

Ministry of Coal has released the monthly performance of Coal India Ltd which are summarised below:

Coal Production:
Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported a decline of 4% Y-o-Y in their coal production. The company has produced 40.74 MnT coal in May’17 against 42.587 MnT in May’16. Coal production has fallen for the second straight month on the yearly basis.

However, On the monthly basis, production has increased by 6% compared with 38.44 MnT in Apr’17.

Overall production during first two months of FY18 (Apr’17-May’17) has decreased by 4% to 79.18 MnT compared with 82.677 MnT during Apr’16-May’16.

Overall Coal Dispatch:
Coal Offtake during May’17 stood 46.41 MnT with an increase of 2.5% M-o-M compared with 45.29 MnT in Apr’17. Also, recording an increase by 1.9% Y-o-Y compared with 45.53 MnT in May’16.

Moreover, Overall coal offtake during Apr’17-May’17 has increased by 4% to 91.7 MnT compared with 87.97 MnT in Apr’16-May’16.

The decline in coal output and an increase in shipments reflects CIL’s attempts to cut down inventories, as the company looks to clear stockpiles.

Coal dispatch to Power Sector:
CIL’s coal dispatch to power sector has marginally fell by 1.2% M-o-M to 32.8 MnT in May’17. On the yearly basis, dispatch has fallen 3.53% compared with 34 MnT in May’16.

During the first two months of the current fiscal (Apr’17-May’17), CIL has dispatched 64.7 MnT coal to the power sector.

Coal E-Auctions:

Spot Auction:
CIL allocated 4.22 MnT coal in the spot auction held in May’17, thus recording an increase of 44% over the notified price.

Quantity allotted in spot auction increased by 2.93% M-o-M compared with 4.1 MnT allocated during Apr’17 and by 15.30% Y-o-Y compared with 3.66 MnT allocated during May’16.

Special Forward E-Auction for Power:
CIL had conducted special forward e-auction for the power sector in May’17. The company allocated 6.32 MnT coal during these auctions with an increase of 31% over the notified price.

Special Forward e-auction has gathered good response among the end users, as the total quantity allocated in these auctions stood 15.93 MnT during Apr’17-May’17, compared with 3.31 MnT allocated during Apr’16-May’16.

Exclusive E-Auction for Non-Power:
About 4.32 MnT coal was allocated in the exclusive E-auction for Non-power sector held on May’17, with an increase of 14% over the notified price.
