- Average wholesale onion prices increase 51.5% year on year to INR 2,012.69 per quintal
- Monthly gains continue, while weekly price increase moderates
India’s wholesale onion market continued to strengthen during the week ended 26 July, with average mandi prices reaching INR 2,012.69 per quintal, according to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare’s Agmarknet API data. Onion remained the strongest-performing vegetable among the major crops tracked, supported by stronger price realization and firmer market conditions. Average wholesale prices were 51.5% higher than INR 1,328.49 per quintal recorded during the corresponding period last year.
Year-on-year recovery remains strong
The annual price recovery remained significant, with wholesale onion prices rising 51.5% compared with the same period last year. However, current prices are still 24.3% lower than the INR 2,658.87 per quintal recorded in July 2024, indicating that the market has not yet returned to the elevated levels seen two years ago. At the same time, prices remain 65.55% higher than the INR 1,215.75 per quintal recorded in July 2023, underlining the continued volatility in India’s onion market over recent years.
Monthly uptrend continues despite slower weekly gains
Wholesale onion prices maintained their upward trajectory in the near term, increasing 9.09% from INR 1,844.85 per quintal recorded on 26 June 2026. On a weekly basis, however, the pace of gains eased, with prices rising 1.17% from INR 1,989.24 per quintal on 19 July 2026, suggesting that the recent rally is continuing at a more gradual pace.
Outlook
India’s wholesale onion market continues to trade above year-ago levels, supported by stronger price realization and sustained monthly gains. Although the pace of weekly price increases has moderated, the market remains firm, while comparisons with both 2023 and 2024 highlight the persistent volatility in onion prices.
