India: Onion prices ease as fresh Kharif arrivals improve supply

  • Maharashtra’s weighted average mandi price falls nearly 13% between 16 Sept-3 Oct
  • Fresh kharif supplies, stored stocks and govt buffer releases may improve availability

Improved arrivals and the start of fresh kharif supplies have strengthened the onion availability outlook, with the increase in market supply already weighing on prices across wholesale and retail markets. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, the trend is expected to continue as arrivals increase in the coming weeks.

Mandi prices decline as arrivals improve

Maharashtra’s weighted average mandi onion price declined from around INR 4,030/quintal on 16 September to INR 3,475/quintal on 3 October, marking a drop of nearly 13%. The decline indicates that stronger arrivals are translating into improved supply conditions.

The easing trend is also visible in retail markets, with 126 cities reporting declines of INR 1-21/kg over the past two weeks. Price moderation has been observed across major consuming states, indicating broader improvement in availability.

Fresh kharif arrivals strengthen supply outlook

Fresh kharif onion arrivals have commenced from major producing states, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, adding to supplies from stored stocks. Arrivals from these regions are expected to increase further in the coming weeks.

All-India kharif onion acreage is estimated to be around 5% higher than last year’s already strong level, while crop conditions remain favourable across major producing regions. The IMD rainfall outlook during the harvesting period is also supportive, with no excessive rainfall forecast in key Kharif onion regions, which should facilitate harvesting, drying and movement.

Buffer releases provide additional market support

The government is supplementing market supplies through continued release of onion buffer stocks to major consumption centres. More than 2 lakh quintals have been disposed of through 8 Kanda Express services and 467 trucks across 123 cities.

Additional rail rakes are being planned to move larger quantities to high-consumption markets. These efforts are expected to strengthen availability and improve supply distribution ahead of the festive season.

Outlook

The onion supply outlook has improved with fresh Kharif arrivals gaining momentum, stored stocks remaining available and government buffer releases continuing. Higher acreage and favourable crop conditions could keep supplies comfortable in the coming weeks, limiting near-term price upside. However, the pace of arrivals, movement from producing regions and festive-season demand will remain key factors for price direction.
