India: Omsairam Steels (Uma Steel) commissions 1.5 mnt pellet plant in Maharashtra

  • 1.5 MTPA pellet plant commissioned at Tadali, Chandrapur
  • Plant produces 6-20 mm pellets with 63% Fe content

Omsairam Steels & Alloys Pvt. Ltd. (Uma Steel), based in Jalna, Maharashtra, has commissioned a 1.5 mnt per annum (mnt/y) pellet plant at Tadali in Chandrapur, Maharashtra.

The plant produces 6-20 mm pellets with an Fe content of 63% and is expected to strengthen the group’s raw material availability for its downstream steel operations. Company data indicates FY26 capacities of around 360,000 t each for crude steel and long products.

The commissioning adds to the existing steelmaking footprint of the Om Sai Ram Group in Maharashtra. Additionally, the group’s Chandrapur-based Sanvijay Alloys and power Limited (Om Sai Ram) has an installed capacity of around 150,000 t/y of coal-based sponge iron, 143,000 t/y of crude steel and 102,000 t/y of long products, according to company data.

The presence of Sanvijay Alloys’ DRI and steelmaking facilities in Chandrapur provides an established downstream base for the group’s new pellet capacity. The additional pellet availability could help improve raw material integration and provide greater flexibility in managing the group’s iron ore and pellet requirements.

For Omsairam Steels, the project marks a move towards greater integration and a more secure raw material supply chain. It is expected to reduce dependence on external pellet purchases, support smoother production planning and improve operating efficiency.

The development comes as steel producers in central India increasingly focus on backward integration and captive raw material arrangements to manage input-cost volatility and protect margins.

With the new pellet plant complementing the group’s existing DRI, crude steel and long-product capacities in Chandrapur, the Om Sai Ram Group is strengthening its integrated steelmaking footprint in the region.
