India: Odisha’s latest mine auctions attract leading steel, mining players

  • JSP applies for 3 manganese & iron ore, 3 iron ore blocks
  • Vedanta joins race for 2 standalone manganese blocks

Jindal Steel and Power (JSP), Rungta Sons, Shyam, Kalyani and Tata Steel are all in the race for the current set of mines being auctioned in Odisha.

After a long gap of two years, two manganese, three manganese and iron ore, and three iron ore blocks are being auctioned in the state by the government.

As per sources, the greatest number of applications has been received for the Putulipani (iron ore), Jalahuri (iron ore and manganese), Roida-I (iron ore and manganese), and Roida-D (manganese) blocks. Jindal Steel and Power has placed technical bids for all three manganese and iron blocks and all three iron ore blocks, while Tata Steel has applied for just one iron ore and one manganese and iron block. Vedanta, interestingly, is also in the race for the standalone manganese blocks, both the Roida-D and the smaller Bhanjikusum blocks.

Koira iron ore block in Sundargarh has elicited interest from Kalyani Steel, Orissa Metaliks, Shyam Ore, Rungta, JSP, and JSW, among others. While JSW has applied for two blocks, Brahmani has applied for the Roida-I manganese and iron block in Keonjhar.

These are the first set of mines being auctioned under the new Bharatiya Janata Party government in Odisha, the country’s largest iron and manganese producer. Odisha had been the first to kick off auctions of mines, after the Government amended the mining act, and the state has reaped huge revenues from them. However, there has been a considerable lull in the auction of new mines in the last two years, amid the change of government.
