India: Odisha Iron Ore Production Fell 3% M-o-M in May’17

India’s largest iron ore producing state – Odisha which contributes nearly 50% share in country’s ore output has registered 3% drop in its monthly iron ore production in May’17. The state produced 8.81 MnT iron ore in May’17 against 9.06 MnT in Apr’17.

Odisha’s iron ore production has moved up by 6% Y-o-Y from 8.32 MnT in May’16 to 8.81 MnT in May’17.

Rungta Mines – Odisha’s largest iron ore producer registered output of 1.78 MnT in May’17, down 16% M-o-M. Other major merchant iron ore producers were Serajuddin Mines – 1.26 MnT (up 15% M-o-M) and KJS Ahluwalia – 0.73 MnT (up 3% M-o-M).

State-owned miner – Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) produced 0.47 MnT iron ore last month compared to 0.68 MnT in Apr’17.

Tata Steel’s iron ore production from Odisha stood at 1.18 MnT in May’17 (up 12% M-o-M) and that of SAIL was recorded at 0.58 MnT (up 4% M-o-M).

Iron ore dispatches from merchant mines moved up in May’17 – Iron ore dispatch by Odisha based merchant mines stood at 6.17 MnT in May’17 against 5.66 MnT in Apr’17. The figures exclude movement for export and dispatches of captive miners – SAIL, Tata Steel & JSPL.

Major merchant miners in Odisha reduced iron ore prices towards beginning of May’17 owing to fall in sponge prices. After this Odisha iron ore prices remained unchanged later in the month of May’17.
