India: Odisha High Court Order on Tata’s Four Iron Ore Mines ends Today

Important day for Tata Steel as Odisha High Court will conduct hearing on renewal of its four mines in Odisha, which were deemed to be renewed.

The Odisha government had allowed Tata Steel to operate its four Iron ore mines in the state till 28 Jan’15, as per an interim order of the Odisha High Court dated 3 Dec’14.

Earlier, the state government had ordered the company to stop operations at four mines namely Bamebari, Katamati, Joda East and Joda West, after the steel major failed to meet the 15 Nov’14 deadline for forest and environment clearances.

Tata Steel moved the High Court and argued that its mines should not be shut as they were captive ones and suspension of work will lead to unemployment of a large number of workers, mostly tribals.
