India: Odisha govt approves steel capacity expansion proposals

The Odisha government has approved investment proposals worth INR 1.46 lakh crore in the metals sector, with an aim to increase the state’s steel production to 100 mn t over the next few years. The approved projects:

  • Expanding the capacity of Bhushan Power and Steel – recently acquired by JSW Steel Ltd.
  • Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar plant capacity will be increased to 8 mn t/year from 3 mn t.
  • JSPL’s Angul plant will have an installed capacity of 25 mn t/year from 6 mn t, making it the largest single location steel plant in the world.
  • Expanding the downstream capacities of the Keonjhar and Dhenkanal units of Rungta Mines to 3 mn t and 7.55 mn t/year respectively.
