India: NTPC evaluating Bids for its 7.25 MnT Coal Requirement

NTPC is evaluating bids received from suppliers for its 7.25 MnT Coal requirement. Knowledge Infrastructure Systems Pvt. Ltd (KISPL), Adani Enterprises and MMTC are among the companies in the competition.

NTPC has invited bids for supplying of 7.25 MnT of imported Coal through 4 separate tenders for their various plants on 19 Nov, 2013.

NTPC invited bids for following plants with quantities:
1 MnT (+/-10%) – Simhadri & Ramagundam Power Plants
1.75 MnT (+/-10%) – Rihand, Vindhyanchal Plants
2.25 MnT (+/-10%) – Talcher, Kaniha, Farakka, Kahalgaon & Barh Power Plants
2.25 MnT (+/-10%) – Dadri, Unchahar, Sipat, Korba and Mouda Power Plants

NTPC is India’s biggest coal user with a consumption of about 166.7 MnT of coal in current fiscal. It has been committed a supply of 150 MnT of Coal from Coal India and Singareni Collieries. The remaining 16.7 MnT will be imported to fulfil its requirement.

Out of 16.7 MnT NTPC has already ordered about 9.7 MnT of Coal. For rest, it has floated tender with total quantity of 7.25 MnT for its plants located in different regions.

A senior NTPC executive mentioned, “This 7.25 MT is being sourced through 4 separate tenders for which the price bids are open and they are under evaluation.”

It is being confirmed from other sources that KISPL, Adani Enterprises and MMTC are competing for supplying Coal to NTPC.

NTPC has Power generation capacity of 42,454 MW of with 17 Coal fired Power plants. Its Coal demand will further increase, as it has a target of becoming a 128,000 MW power producer by 2032. Out of this 56% or 71,680 MW will be Coal-based.

India’s largest power producer, NTPC has been allocated 6 captive Coal blocks and aiming to mine 15 MnT pa in 3 years. However, it has not been able to make them operational so far.

NTPC contribute 18.3% share in India’s total installed Power generation capacity. Whereas Ministry of Power quotes that, India’s total capacity is around 227,356.73 MW and about 58.6% (133,188.4 MW) Power is produced by Coal.
