Indian Non-Coking Coal Imports

India: Non-Coking Coal Imports Fall 8% M-o-M in Jan’18

According to the vessel-line up data compiled by CoalMint Research, Indian Non-coking coal imports have fallen on the monthly basis in Jan’18, but were still strong compared with the imports recorded in the  corresponding month of the previous year.

Coal imports were continuously rising due to the shortage of coal in the domestic market; however the enhanced coal production from CIL had slowed down the coal buying from overseas markets. Non-coking coal imports were down 8% M-o-M to 13.49 MnT in Jan’18, compared with 14.53 MnT in Dec’17.

Nevertheless, the restocking need from Power sector and strong demand from Non-power sector had maintained import-levels high. On the yearly basis, Non-coking coal imports had increased 47% Y-o-Y from 9.17 MnT in Jan’17.

As per the data provided by Ministry of Power, the available coal stock at the power plants has reached 14.814 MnT as on 05 Feb’18, sufficient for 10 days of power generation. The same was seen at 12.806 MnT levels in the previous month.

The increase in domestic coal production has reduced the import demand from the power sector.  However, coal import from the Non-power sector is expected to remain firm in the coming months.

Major Non-Coking Coal Exporters:
Indonesian coal exports were down 22% M-o-M to 7.49 MnT in Jan’18, primarily due to fall in imported coal demand from the power sector. Moreover, the aggressive buying from China and high coal prices had also made it difficult for the Indian buyers to procure shipments during the month.

On the yearly basis, Exports had increased 12% Y-o-Y compared with 6.68 MnT in Jan’17.

South African coal export to India rose 11% M-o-M to 3.43 MnT in Jan’18, compared with 3.10 MnT in Dec’17. On the yearly basis, exports had witnessed significant growth of 78% compared with 1.93 MnT in Jan’17.
