In Jan’18, Coking Coal imports in India fell around 4.49% over the imports in Dec’17, an analysis of the import data collected by CoalMint Research shows.
According to the data collected by CoalMint Research, around 4.89 MnT of Coking Coal was imported in the country in Jan’18 against the imports of around 5.12 MnT in Dec’17.

The shrinkage in the imports was mainly due to the coal prices hovering at high rates during Dec’17, when the imports were booked. In Dec’17, the supply in Australia was also tight due to the New Year holidays, contributing towards the reduction in the imports in Jan’18.
ORIGIN WISE IMPORTS
A break-up of the countries of import shows that imports from all major importing nations were lower—mainly due to the higher coal prices.

Among the various ports in India, the Paradip port had handled the highest volume of imports during the month under review, followed by the Mormugao and Haldia ports.

During the month under review, SAIL had procured the highest import consignment of 1.4 MnT; SAIL imported the second highest of 0.59 MnT and the third highest import consignment corresponded to RINL at 0.46 MnT.
The other major importers during the month were: Visa Steel, Jindal Steel & Power, Swiss Singapore, JSW, Electrosteel, among others.
