Met Coke is a key element for steel making primarily used as reducing agent in blast furnace.
India, despite heavily relying on imports, has an installed capacity of 52.1 mn t for producing met coke which is obtained by destructive distillation of coking coal.
Large steel makers have resorted to coke manufacturing for catering their requirement, with SAIL having the highest production capacity of 13.8 mn t followed by Tata Steel and JSW Steel.
Most of the met coke plants are concentrated in the Eastern region, with Odisha having the largest share among the other states.
