India: JSPL enters coated flat steel production; commissions CGL at Angul

  • CGL-1 to have installed capacity of 0.2 mntpa
  • Company portfolio to include galvanised, galvalume

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) enters the coated finished-flat steel manufacturing space with the commissioning of a continuous galvanizing line (CGL) this June. This milestone positions the company alongside industry leaders such as JSW Limited, Tata Steel Limited (TSL), ArcelorMittal, and Nippon Steel India Limited (AM/NS India). Notably, JSW Limited and TSL remain the primary blast furnace-based producers manufacturing galvalume (zinc-aluminium) flat coils.

With the commissioning of CGL-1 at the Angul plant in Odisha, JSPL broadens its product portfolio to encompass galvanised (zinc-coated) and galvalume (zinc-aluminium) offerings. This expansion strengthens the company’s branded line-up to include Jindal Panther Galvanized and  Galvalume. The company plans to produce only galvanised coils in the initial stage.

The company has a cold rolling mill (CRM) facility with an installed capacity of 1.2 mntpa. This includes the CGL-1, which has an installed capacity of 0.2 million tonnes per annum (mntpa). The CGL facility is well-equipped to produce coils with thicknesses ranging from 0.15 mm to 1.50 mm and widths from 700 mm to 1,400 mm, ensuring high precision and consistent quality across diverse applications.

Additionally, the line would enable production of thinner galvanised coils for the tube industry, silos, tank farms, and pre-engineered buildings, as well as high-strength galvanised steel for automotive underbody components. The Angul facility is currently equipped with a hot-strip mill (HSM) of 6 MTPA.

Jindal Steel is poised to increase crude steel capacity at the Angul plant by another 6 mntpa this year, bringing total capacity to 12 mntpa by the end of 2025, establishing it as one of India’s largest single-location steel plants.
