India: Iron Pellet Import Offers at around USD 175/ MT CFR

kandla portIndian Iron Pellet import market is not very active presently. Importers based in the north west region of India have preferred to procure the material from domestic market.

Imports of Pellet to India which were at 0.8 MnT in FY12, increased to 1.6 MnT in FY13. According to provisional data, India has imported 248,100 MT of Pellets in Apr-Nov 2013.

Current import offers to India are quoted at around USD 175/MT CFR India; landed cost stands at around INR 9,500-10,000/MT. Whereas, buying from domestic market will cost INR 9,000-9,200/MT.

“We are not importing Pellets at the moment because of sufficient availability from domestic producers (increasing capacities) and narrowing price difference in landed cost from domestic and import market.

Also, we are able to place bookings for about 6,000-7,000 MT of Pellets with KIOCL (Mangalore), as per our requirement. Whereas, 40,000-45,000 MT has to be purchased from overseas market at one go”, a couple of importers based in Gandhidham told SteelMint.

In FY14 (Apr-Nov),  223,100 MT Pellets were imported at Kandla Port. In the similar period, Mundra Port has received only 25,000 MT Pellets from Australia, in April (15,000 MT) and May (10,000 MT).
