India: HR Plate prices drift lower as trade stays subdued

  • Buyers hold back amid weak demand, mirroring the HRC trend
  • Ample supply adds to the pressure.

India’s hot-rolled (HR) plate (IS2062, Gr E250 Br, 20-40 mm) market extended its downward move in the week ended 15 July 2026, echoing softness .Weak demand, sluggish trading, and a cautious mood pulled prices lower, with buyers holding off purchases; much the same wait-and-watch behaviour that has kept HRC subdued. Adding to the drag, comfortable material availability meant supply offered no cushion for prices.

BigMint’s assessment placed HR plate prices in Mumbai at INR 60,300/t ($626/t), down INR 300/t ($3/t) w-o-w, while Delhi saw a steeper fall of INR 400/t ($4/t) to INR 59,000/t ($612/t) a decline broadly consistent with the correction already underway in HRC.

Trading stayed thin through the week, with buyers sticking to hand-to-mouth purchases. Fresh inquiries were scarce, as seasonal rains disrupted project execution and logistics in several regions, leaving distributors and stockists unable to build momentum even with competitive offers.

On the supply front, availability remained comfortable, with no signs of shortages or disruption. Sentiment stayed cautious overall, as slow deal closures continued – a pattern that has similarly kept HRC trading subdued, reinforcing the correlation between the two markets.

Import and Export volumes

Bulk Plate imports stood at 22,796 t, largely sourced from South Korea and China, adding modestly to the domestic market.

A shipment of 6,550 t of plate is expected to move out next week, adding to the recent flow of plate exports from India.

Outlook

HR plate prices are likely to hold within a narrow range in the near term, tracking the same measured, seasonally slow pattern seen in HRC. Any clearer price direction will hinge on demand recovery and project execution trends, which will also shape the broader flat-steel market’s trajectory.
