- GSI investigates three blocks for limestone deposits
- Private players explore new, stalled cement projects
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is conducting G3-stage investigations at the Lakshmipur, Pippalgaon and Tamsi blocks in Telangana’s Adilabad district to identify areas suitable for limestone mining.
The investigations include field-level geological studies and borewell sampling to assess limestone availability and grade. The exercise is expected to generate baseline geoscience data that could support the evaluation of potential private-sector cement projects in the district.
Adilabad draws renewed interest from cement manufacturers
The exploration comes amid renewed interest in Adilabad’s limestone resources for cement manufacturing. Private cement companies are assessing opportunities to establish capacity in the district, with reports indicating interest from Adani Ambuja Cement in a potential cement factory.
Industry sources estimate that the district has substantial limestone reserves, potentially providing a raw-material base for cement manufacturing over several decades. However, the commercial viability of these resources will depend on deposit quality, mineability and regulatory clearances.
Stalled cement projects could gain renewed momentum
Renuka Cements is reportedly looking to accelerate its stalled cement factory proposal at Ramai Rampur in Sathnala Mandal. The project has faced delays, including concerns raised by Adivasi land oustees regarding acquired agricultural land.
Adilabad also has a history of cement manufacturing through the Cement Corporation of India (CCI) plant, established in 1984. Production was halted in 1996 before the plant was closed in 1998. The facility had provided direct and indirect employment to nearly 4,000 people.
Limestone exploration could strengthen the region’s cement outlook
Confirmation of commercially viable limestone deposits could strengthen the raw-material base for future cement projects in Adilabad. This could improve project feasibility and support investment decisions by cement manufacturers.
However, actual capacity development would depend on reserve quality, land availability, regulatory approvals and investment commitments.
