India: Gravita India plans INR 160 crore copper recycling plant in Gujarat

  • Facility to have installed capacity of 29,400 t/year
  • Plant operations expected within next 12 months

Gravita India Ltd has announced plans to establish a new copper recycling plant in Mandvi, Gujarat, as part of its strategy to strengthen its non-ferrous recycling business and expand its sustainable manufacturing capabilities.

The company will invest around INR 160 crore in the project through internal accruals. The proposed facility will have an installed capacity of nearly 29,400 metric tonnes per annum (t/year), with commercial operations expected to begin within the next 12 months.

According to the company, the project is aimed at enhancing its value-added recycling capabilities while improving vertical integration across its metals business. Mandvi was selected as the project location due to its favorable infrastructure and strong logistics connectivity, which are expected to support efficient procurement and distribution operations.

The company also highlighted its acquisition of a 98.95% stake in Rashtriya Metal Industries Ltd (RMIL) for INR 559.08 crore during FY26. RMIL manufactures copper and copper alloy products and operates an integrated manufacturing facility at Sarigam in Gujarat. Following the acquisition, RMIL became a subsidiary of Gravita India from 12 March. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Gravita’s position across the copper value chain while enhancing its downstream product portfolio and operational integration.

The development marks another step in Gravita India’s ongoing diversification beyond its traditional lead recycling operations. Over the past few years, the company has steadily expanded into aluminium, plastic, rubber, and copper recycling segments to strengthen its presence in the broader non-ferrous metals market.

Industry participants view copper recycling as an increasingly important segment amid rising demand from the power, infrastructure, renewable energy, and electric vehicle sectors. The latest investment follows Gravita India’s continued expansion in the recycling industry, where the company has traditionally maintained a strong presence in lead scrap recycling and secondary lead production. With tightening global copper supply and increasing focus on sustainable manufacturing, the new Gujarat facility is expected to support Gravita India’s long-term growth strategy while reinforcing its contribution to circular economy practices.

With companies like Gravita India expanding aggressively into copper recycling, can secondary copper become a major solution to India’s growing raw material dependence?

These key industry questions will be discussed further at BigMint India Non-Ferrous Week 2026 on 9-10 June in Mumbai, bringing together leaders across the primary and secondary copper value chain.
