India: Government okays policy for setting up coal projects in non-minable land

The Union Cabinet has approved the policy for use of land, acquired under the Coal Bearing Areas Act, which is currently not economically viable for coal mining. The provision would facilitate utilisation of such land for setting up various infrastructure, including washeries, coal handling plants, gasification projects, railway sidings and thermal and renewable power plants. Besides, it will provide rehabilitation and resettlement to the families affected by the land acquisition.
