India opens new export frontier with first fortified rice shipment from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica

  • FRK emerges as affordable, scalable nutrition solution
  • Move aligns with India’s agri-trade expansion goals

India has opened a new chapter in its agri-export portfolio with the maiden shipment of fortified rice kernel (FRK) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica. Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the 12-tonne (t) consignment represents the first international export of nutritionally enhanced rice from the state. The development underscores India’s intent to integrate its domestic nutrition strategy with its global trade expansion.

Linking nutrition policy with export growth

The initiative is closely tied to India’s “Kuposhan Mukt Bharat” vision under the national Poshan Abhiyan, which promotes fortified rice as a means to combat hidden hunger and micronutrient deficiencies. Domestically, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been scaling fortified rice distribution across welfare schemes. The latest export milestone highlights India’s readiness to take its food fortification capability beyond domestic borders, positioning the country as a credible supplier in global nutrition-focused food systems.

Chhattisgarh emerges as a fortified rice hub

Known as India’s “rice bowl,” Chhattisgarh has gradually moved from bulk grain supply to value-added rice production. The Costa Rica shipment reflects the state’s growing role in producing science-backed, high-value grain products. For farmers, millers, and processors, this transition signals a shift toward specialised nutrition markets that offer stronger margins and international visibility.

Industry body perspectives

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said the milestone diversifies India’s agri-export portfolio and reinforces the country’s leadership in deploying technology for public health outcomes. He added that APEDA will continue to facilitate global market access for fortified and value-added staples, especially in regions vulnerable to nutrition deficits.

Mukesh Jain, President of the Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh, described the shipment as a “turning point” for the state’s export ecosystem. He said new overseas markets for fortified rice kernels are being identified and stressed the need for sustained collaboration with APEDA to accelerate growth in this segment.

How fortified rice kernels are produced

Fortified rice kernels are manufactured by blending rice flour with key micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, followed by extrusion into rice-like grains. These fortified grains are then mixed with regular rice to enhance nutritional value without changing texture or taste — an essential factor for widespread consumer acceptance. The Costa Rica export underscores international confidence in India’s capability to deliver cost-efficient and scalable nutrition solutions.

India’s growing role in global food fortification

Globally, fortified foods are gaining traction as part of food security and public health strategies. India’s entry into the FRK export market reflects its broader ambition to become a dependable supplier of affordable nutrition solutions to emerging economies. By extending its fortification initiative into trade, India is positioning fortified rice as both a domestic health instrument and an export opportunity aligned with global demand for nutrient-rich staples.

Outlook

The flag-off of Chhattisgarh’s first FRK consignment signals a strategic shift where agricultural trade growth aligns with social impact. As more markets seek nutrition-driven staples, India’s expertise in food fortification could become a competitive advantage — blending export diversification with leadership in global nutrition policy.
