The Ministry of Coal (MoC) has floated a new timeline for sale of lignite blocks envisaged under the fifth tranche of the commercial mining auctions. On the other hand, no change was made regarding the timeline of the remaining coal blocks.
It may be recalled that the fifth tranche of auctions was initiated along with sale of blocks left over from the third and fourth tranches which had received a single bid in the technical round.
In total, the ministry had offered a total of 122 blocks, comprising of 113 coal and 9 lignite blocks. Of these, 109 blocks were earmarked for the fifth tranche; while for the second attempt of sale under the third and fourth tranches, the blocks on offer were 9 and 4 respectively.
The latest revision pertains specifically to the sale of lignite blocks which are spread across Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu with a combined geological reserve of 1,390.97 mnt.

Auction schedule for lignite blocks
As per the latest schedule, the deadline for registration, and sale of tender documents along with various activities involved in the bidding process have been extended.
The due date for technical bid submission has been re-scheduled to 20 July, 2022. Finally, the electronic auction, consisting of the financial bidding round, will commence in the third week of August, 2022 which was earlier slated to begin from 21 July, 2022.
