India’s thermal power plants have imported 9.21 mnt of coal for blending purpose in Apr-Jun’22 period against 3.07 mnt in Apr-Jun’21. This comes after the government had advised power companies to resort to imports to keep pace with the rising demand. NTPC was the largest importer in the review period. Electricity boards from Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra also received imported coal in Q1FY23 as against nil imports recorded in the year-ago period.
