India: Chrome ore dispatches rise 15% m-o-m in Jan’26

  • Higher ferro chrome prices boost chrome ore dispatches
  • IMFA leads chrome ore procurement, all from captive mines

India’s chrome ore dispatches rose 15% m-o-m to 312,940 tonnes (t) in January 2026, compared with 273,099 t in December 2025. The increase was supported by an INR 1,500/t ($16/t) m-o-m rise in ferro chrome prices, which improved market sentiment. Higher realisations and stable operating costs also boosted dispatches, particularly for IMFA.

In January, IMFA’s dispatches surged 33% m-o-m to 76,421 t, while Tata Steel recorded a 19% increase to 34,380 t. OMC’s dispatches grew 14% to 137,845 t, whereas FACOR saw a marginal 3% decline to 30,199 t.

Procurement trends

IMFA remained the largest chrome ore buyer, sourcing 76,421 t entirely from captive mines. Jindal Stainless ranked second, procuring 91% (46,722 t) from OMC and the remaining 9% (4,449 t) from captive sources. Balasore Alloys secured third place with 29,646 t, fully sourced from its own mines.
