- TMT bars’ emission intensity found to average 0.6 tCO2e/tfs
- Product found to have 70.8% greenness, certified till 31 Mar’26
Indian steelmaker ARS Steels and Alloy International Private Limited has received a five-star rating from the Ministry of Steel for its pioneering ultra-low emission TMT bars, as per the government’s green steel taxonomy.
The Chennai-based company produced 156,898 tonnes (t) of its green steel TMT bars in FY’25, which were found to have an average emissions intensity of 0.6432 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of finished steel (tCO2e/tfs). This is much lower than the government-mandated 1.6tCO2/tfs for a five-star rating, with the industry average emissions factor being 2.5 tCO2/tcs.
The product was also found to have 70.8% greenness, as per government norms. The certification is valid till 31 March 2026.
The assessment was conducted by the ministry-established National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST), which has been authorised as the nodal agency for the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of the greenness of steel.
Notably, ARS Green Steel products are eligible for all of India’s top green certifications: GRIHA, LEED, IGBC, and GreenPro. ARS Green Steel TMT rebar is India’s first and only product registered on the GRIHA Product Catalogue under Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Innovation.
The majority of the company’s emissions emanating from Scope 2 (electricity usage) are being gradually eliminated through the adoption of renewable power, the share of which stood at around 30% of total consumption in 2024.
No fossil fuel is burned during operations, and 100% of production is through the hot charging process. In an effort to bring down its footprint to around 0.21 tCO2/tfs by 2025, the steel producer has planned to enter into an 80 MW pure solar power purchase agreement with Torrent Power. It expects to scale up the share of renewables to 85% by 2025.
