The combination of maritime risks and declining inventories supported prices despite intermittent diplomatic efforts.
Indonesia expands into primary aluminium production
Aluminium reduction cells at Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park’s Taijing project have been energised, according to a 20 October report. The first phase, developed by PT Infinity Aluminum Industry, targets 300,000 t/y, within a planned total capacity of 600,000 t/y. The commissioning milestone advances Indonesia’s expansion into primary aluminium production. The pace of commissioning, power availability and production ramp-up will determine when the additional metal reaches the market.
Codelco sets record European copper premium at $350/t for 2027
Chile’s Codelco has offered European customers a record premium of $350/t for refined copper deliveries in 2027, up 7.7% from $325/t for 2026. Aurubis separately raised its 2027 European premium to $347/t from $315/t. Traders have redirected copper shipments towards the United States amid potential import tariffs, contributing to tighter availability elsewhere. Mine disruptions, including problems at Codelco’s El Teniente operation, have added to supply concerns.
Kazakhstan launches $1.8 bn copper smelter project
