Colombia: Coal Exports Up 24% Y-o-Y in 2017

Colombia has recorded a significant growth in coal exports during 2017. According to the data provided by customs, coal export from the country was 105.87 MnT in CY17, 24% more than the export total of 85.59 MnT recorded in CY16.

Colombia had already surpassed its previous year’s export total in Nov’17. While, in Dec’17, monthly coal export from the country had hit 3-year high from 2015, the period up to which CoalMint has maintained customs’ data for Colombian coal exports.

Coal exports totaled 14.82 MnT in Dec’17, up 113% M-o-M from 6.69 MnT in Nov’17, which was also 47% higher on the year compared with 10.06 MnT in Dec’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Colombian Non-coking coal had a share of 95% in the total yearly coal exports. Total Non-Coking coal exports had increased 23% Y-o-Y to 101.15 MnT in CY17, compared with 82.12 MnT in CY16.

Met Coke was the second-largest exported grade of coal, whose shipments had increased 42% Y-o-Y to 2.52 MnT in CY17.

Coking coal and Pet Coke exports too had recorded a similar growth of 27% and 39% respectively, in CY17.

Major Coal Importers:
Turkey remained the largest coal importer of Colombian coal in CY17, followed by Netherlands, Chile, Mexico, US and Brazil.

Turkish coal imports rose 18% on the year to 18.62 MnT in CY17, compared with 15.76 MnT in CY16.

Coal import by the Netherlands had increased 29% Y-o-Y to 17.49 MnT in CY17. Chile was the third-largest coal receiver of Colombian coal in CY17, with imports of 17.49 MnT.

Amongst the top 8 major coal imports in CY17, only the US has witnessed a fall in yearly coal imports. Coal import from the country had decreased 17% on the year to 6.33 MnT in 2017.

On the other hand, Mexico had registered remarkable growth in coal imports from 0.35 MnT from CY16 to 7.13 MnT in CY17.
