India has emerged as the world’s largest importer of coking coal in CY’21, overtaking China. However, Indian coking coal imports increased by 7% y-o-y to 56.27 million tonnes (mn t) in CY’21 against 52.41 mn t in CY’20, on the back of higher crude steel production.
Coking coal exports by Australia decreased by just 1.4% on the year to 165.4 million tonnes (mn t) in 2021 compared to 167.8 mn t in 2020. Australia’s coal exports to India increased 28% on the year to over 56 mn t in 2021 compared to 43.7 mn t last year.
