Coal Market Snapshots

>> There will be no Anthracite Coal imports in Ukraine from 2019, as the Thermal Power Plants in that country are switching to gas coal. In view of the switch-over, consumption of Anthracite Coal has been declining in that country. In 2016, the annual consumption was at 10.6 MnT and in 2018, the consumption is expected to decline to 3 MnT.

>>In China, Coking Coal and Met Coke futures have risen for the fifth straight session as demand for the commodities turned stronger on the stocking spree of the steel makers there. Steel mills there hoped for resumption of full production after the Lunar New Year Holidays.

In the Dalian Commodity Exchange of China, Met Coke and Coking Coal futures rose to Yuan 2,163/MT and Yuan 1,368.50/MT.

>>Aruna Sharma, the Union Steel Secretary, emphasized in a recent conference the need for adoption of new technologies to reduce consumption of Coking Coal in view of the domestic inadequacy of the coal.

She also highlighted that in 2017 India had crossed 100 MnT of steel production, and at the same time, the per capita steel consumption in the country went up to 67 KG, however, it is lower than that in China at 200 KG.
