According to CIL (Coal India Ltd)’s press release, the miner’s coal output peaked to a a new high of 3.17 Million Tonnes (MnT) on 20 March 2020 – the highest ever single day production so far – overtaking the 3.14 MnT production that the CIL recorded on 25 March 2019. The output of 3.17 MnT generated in a single day can run a power plant of 660-mw.
The key subsidiaries of CIL’s production that make up to 50% of CIL’s total coal production are Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and South Eastern Coalfields Limited. Both the subsidiaries contributed 0.93 MnT and 0.81 MnT respectively to this feat.
“3.17 Million Tonnes is the highest ever single day production so far” said an official of the Company adding “in the remaining days of the month we aim to better this figure and increase further”. In fact, the production could have been even higher but for a disturbance at Lingaraj of MCL.
CIL’s production started a path of healthy recovery from October 2019 onward after a prolonged and severe monsoon impeded its production tempo. Against 240.93 MnT in the first half of the FY 2019-20 the company produced 276.85 MnT in the next five months from October 2019 to February 2020.
The miner has recently reported that coal stocks at 134 thermal power plants of the country have risen to the highest ever inventory of 40.7 MnT (on 19 March 2020) sufficient for 23 days – one day more than Central Electricity Authority (CEA) mandated 22 days stock. Out of the total stock, imports stand to be at 10.3 MnT and aindigenous stock is at 30.4 MnT.
