China’s Coke Export Falls by 49% in Jan’16

China, the world’s 2nd largest economy, exported about 0.74 MnT in the 1st month of 2016. The export plunged down by almost 50% M-o-M.

China, the world’s top most Met coke exporter and producer, exported about 0.74 MnT of material in January against the preceding month. According to latest data released by China customs, the country’s coke export plunged down by 49%. The country exported 0.71 MnT less coke in Jan’16. Slow economic growth and government’s move to check excess production caused the downfall. Moreover, week long Chinese holidays deteriorated the situation. The country exported 1.45 MnT of coke in Dec’15 and 0.85 MnT in Nov’15.

Indian Met coke imports

 SteelMint assessed that India, one of the major importer of Chinese Met coke, imported about 0.25 MnT of met coke in Jan’16. The nation accounted for about 19% of the total Met coke export from China in the month. India imported about 0.14 MnT of Met coke from China and rest of the quantity was exported by countries like Poland, US and Columbia. Notably, the country’s coke import fell by about 17% in a month’s time.

It is to be noted that in order to safeguard domestic coke producers, Indian Metallurgical Coke Manufacturers Association (IMCOM) on behalf of indigenous producers had applied for instigation of investigation for imposing anti-dumping duty on LAM coke exported from China and Australia. And, reacting on the same, the center is likely to start investigation on anti-dumping duty on Met coke imports.
