In order to increase domestic coal production, China has decided to extend trial operations at 15 mines – with a combined capacity of 43.5 mn t/year – for another year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The extensions are awarded to mines in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Ningxia as well as Shanxi and Shaanxi to help raise coal output by an estimated 150,000 t per day. The regulatory authorities had asked coal producers to hike output in May’21 to meet peak summer demand even as they sought to stabilise prices which have hit record highs on supply concerns.
