China: Manganese Ore Imports Slides Down in Feb’18

According to Chinese customs, the country has witnessed a decrease of 18% M-o-M in its Manganese Ore imports in Feb’18.

China imported 1.88 MnT in Feb’18 against 2.28 MnT in Jan’18. However, on yearly basis, Chinese Manganese Ore imports recorded an increase of 15% as it was 1.63 MnT in Feb’17.

The lunar year festival has prompted Chinese Manganese Ore buyers to fill up their stocks but an appreciation of Rand against USD led to higher Manganese Ore prices from South Africa, China’s largest exporter of Manganese Ore. Moreover, logistical issues in South Africa restricted the supply of the commodity and reduced imports.

South Africa, is the largest exporter of Manganese Ore to China and has witnessed a decrease of 13% M-o-M as it exported 0.75 MnT in Feb’18 against 0.86 MnT in Jan’18. Australia, Ghana, and Gabon were also significant Manganese Ore exporters to China among others.
